How MLD helps with Lymphoedema & Lipoedema...

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised, gentle technique designed to support the lymphatic system — the body’s natural drainage and detoxification network.

Because both lymphoedema and lipoedema involve issues with fluid balance and lymph flow, MLD can play an important role in improving comfort and wellbeing.

For Lymphoedema

In lymphoedema, the lymphatic system is damaged or overloaded, causing fluid to build up in the tissues.
MLD helps by:

  • Encouraging lymph fluid to move away from congested areas

  • Supporting healthy lymphatic circulation

  • Reducing swelling, heaviness, and discomfort

  • Improving mobility and softness of the tissues

  • Supporting skin health and reducing the risk of infection

MLD is often part of a broader management plan that may include compression, exercise, and skin care.

For Lipoedema

Lipoedema involves an abnormal buildup of fat and fluid that can cause pain, sensitivity, and a feeling of heaviness.
MLD may help by:

  • Reducing fluid retention in affected limbs

  • Improving tissue mobility and comfort

  • Supporting circulation and reducing feelings of tightness

  • Helping manage swelling that often appears alongside lipoedema

  • Enhancing overall body comfort and confidence

While MLD does not change lipoedema fat itself, it can significantly improve symptoms and support long-term management.

What ia Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition where lymphatic fluid builds up in the tissues, most commonly in the arms or legs.

This happens when the lymphatic system is damaged, blocked, or not working as effectively as it should.

The result is swelling, heaviness, tightness, or reduced mobility in the affected area.

Lymphoedema can develop after surgery, lymph node removal, radiation, injury, infection, or it can be present from birth.

It is a long-term condition, but with supportive care — such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), compression therapy, exercise, and skin care — many people manage symptoms well and maintain comfort and function.

What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic condition where fat and fluid build up in the legs, hips, buttocks, and arms.

It often causes a feeling of heaviness, tenderness, or pain, and can lead to easy bruising.

Despite common misconceptions, lipoedema is not caused by weight gain and does not respond well to dieting or exercise, which can make it frustrating and emotionally challenging.

Lipoedema is a progressive condition, but with the right support — including Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), compression therapy, gentle movement, and professional guidance — many people experience improved comfort, mobility, appearance, and quality of life.
