How to prepare for your MDL treatment
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Massage is a gentle, deeply relaxing treatment that uses slow, light rhythmic strokes to encourage lymph flow.
Stay well hydrated
-
Drink water before your session.
-
A well-hydrated body makes lymph fluid easier to move.
Avoid heavy meals
-
Eat light 1–2 hours before.
-
A full stomach can make lying down uncomfortable.
Wear comfortable clothing
-
Wear loose, non-restrictive clothes.
-
Avoid tight waistbands, underwear, bras, or jewellery that could restrict flow.
Stay warm & relaxed
-
Being warm relaxes tissues and enhances lymph flow.
-
Take a warm shower or do gentle breathing beforehand.
Remember to empty your bladder
-
MLD often stimulates the kidneys, so it’s best to go before your session.
No lotions or oils on the skin.
-
Keep the skin clean and dry — oils or heavy creams can make gentle skin-stretching techniques more difficult to perform.
-
Please refrain from applying an artificial tan prior to your session.
Unlike traditional massage, no oils or lotions are used in a MLD treatment, as direct skin contact is essential to stimulate lymphatic flow effectively.
Your MLD session will last between 30 & 90 minutes, depending on the areas & issues requiring treatment.
Following your MLD treatment, you may notice the following symptoms as your body adjusts to the increased lymph flow; however, they are typically short-lived & subside within a day or two.
• A sensation of relaxation & lightness.
• A feeling of fatigue.
• A temporary rise in swelling.
• An increased need to urinate as your body processes & eliminates more lymph fluid.
MLD aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself.
Whether you aim to reduce puffiness, improve circulation, or support recovery after surgery, consistent aftercare makes all the difference.
What to expect from your MLD treatment
10 tips to enhance your MLD results
1. Stay hydrated - drink at least 2 litres of water per day over the next week to help eliminate toxins.
2. Avoid alcohol & caffeine for at least 24-48 hours as both can dehydrate & strain the lymphatic system.
3. Support your body - choose whole foods like fruit, vegetables, lean protein & foods high in antioxidants.
4. Think gut health - probiotics & gut-friendly foods like yoghurt & fermented vegetables will assist detox.
5. Don’t overexert yourself - allow time to rest & recover by avoiding strenuous activities straight after MLD.
6. Gentle movement - a slow walk, stretch or yoga can stimulate lymph flow without overexertion.
7. Rest & listen to your body - fatigue is normal after MLD so listen to your body & allow time to rest & reset.
8. Wear loose, comfortable clothing – tight clothing that doesn't breathe can restrict lymph flow.
9. Avoid hot baths & saunas - heat can overstimulate your body, so enjoy warm (not hot) showers for 24 hours.
10. Try dry brushing - use light, upward strokes towards your heart to stimulate lymph flow.
